The Multimedia Technology Health Communication SBIR/STTR Program

How this SBIR Program Determines Research Priorities

The following information outlines two resources that provide this Program with numerous funding opportunities for applicants.

The Nation's Investment in Cancer Research FY08

  1. Improve the Quality of Cancer Care
Use advanced information systems and interoperable electronic health records to inform future research and guide clinical practice.

Translate symptom management and palliative care research findings into interventions to improve care for patients and survivors during their cancer experience and at the end of life.

Develop systems that ensure that new information about cancer prevention, treatment, and follow-up reaches those who need it.

  2. Improving the Quality of Life for Cancer Patients, Survivors, and Their Families
Develop mechanisms that ensure the delivery of new information, interventions, and best practices for addressing the health needs of survivors and their families.

  3. Overcoming Cancer Health Disparities
Using emerging evidence-based findings and research resources, work with communities to develop interventions targeted to the specific needs of underserved populations.

Develop interventions to better coordinate and integrate cancer services for underserved populations.

Develop innovative, educationally- and culturally-appropriate approaches for disseminating information on research results to underserved populations.

  4. Outreach
Develop the tools and delivery systems that can:
    • Raise awareness of health problems that increase the risk of cancer.
    • Assist in making informed cancer-related decisions.
    • Target users' needs across the cancer continuum- prevention, detection and diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life issues.
    • Ensure that everyone has ready access to timely, reliable, understandable information that is also culturally appropriate.
